Unmanned Systems and the Changing Face of Asymmetric Warfare

Unmanned systems, including drones and unmanned vehicles, have had a profound impact on asymmetric warfare. In conflicts where one side may have superior traditional military hardware, the use of unmanned systems can level the playing field.
Take the case of non - state actors or smaller military forces. They can use relatively inexpensive UAVs and UGVs to conduct hit - and - run attacks, disrupt supply lines, or gather intelligence. For example, in some regional conflicts, small groups have used DIY drones to carry out surveillance on larger, more conventional military forces. These drones can be easily hidden and launched, making it difficult for the larger force to counter.
On the other hand, larger military powers can also use unmanned systems to gain an edge in asymmetric situations. They can deploy a large number of UAVs in a "swarm" formation to overwhelm the enemy's air defenses. UGVs can be used to clear areas of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in regions where insurgent groups are active, reducing the risk to their own troops. Unmanned systems thus offer flexibility and cost - effectiveness in asymmetric warfare scenarios.
